We often look at obeying God as this arduous task. We think it involves flashing lights and sparklers. But, the reality is that our hearts are inclined to obey God. We want to obey him. We do not really want to turn away. It is when we cannot see him as the gentle, loving God that wants the best for us that we choose our own path. God is so patient with us. He waits for us to make the right decision. And when we like a child choose to disobey, we end up affecting those around us in a negative way. But rather, when we choose to obey God, there is a positive result of this decision.
Watching a child learn to obey is delightful. Many parents loathe the idea of teaching their child to obey their commands. But, God does this with us all the time, and enjoys watching us choose. He gives us the choice to follow in his ways or to choose our own ways. And, he enjoys watching us choose him. Just like a parent that gives their child a big hug when they choose to obey, so does our God. It is not a chore to obey him but rather a privilege. When we obey him, we can enjoy all of the love he has to give. However unlike an angry, frustrated parent, when we disobey, he patiently waits for us to choose correctly.
I am in such awe of God and how he works. I am so thankful that he enjoys parenting me! Over the years, I have gone from rebellious to somewhat obedient and he has been patient every step of the way. I'm so grateful that he has placed a heart in me that wants to obey. And, I continue to pray that each day, I will hear him gently and peacefully, telling me to quietly come to him and obey. It is a joy to be his child and what a privilege to live life in his family.
